Castlewood School (K–12)
Castlewood School offers a well-rounded academic program designed to meet the needs of all students. In addition to core curriculum courses, students have access to co-curricular activities and opportunities to explore athletics, arts, and leadership programs.
Through its partnership with the Northeast Technical High School, students can also participate in vocational and technical education programs. Special education services are supported through the Northeast Educational Services Cooperative, ensuring resources are available for students with diverse learning needs.
The school campus has continued to evolve over the years with facility additions and renovations, including new classrooms, library space, athletic areas, and other modern learning spaces.

Preschool Program
Castlewood also offers a preschool program designed to help young learners build foundational skills before entering kindergarten.
- Location: Castlewood Elementary School
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.
- Eligibility: Children must be 4 years old by September 1
- Transportation: Bus service is available to the school but students must be picked up at 11:15 a.m.
- Breakfast: Students are eligible for morning breakfast services.

School History
The Castlewood School District’s first term was held in 1882-83, and construction on the big brick schoolhouse which was located on the present property was begun in 1905. Showing the city’s historical support for local education, the vote for the school bond election was 83 in favor and one against.
After nine rural districts consolidated with the town school in 1948, an elementary wing with an auditorium was built in 1952, with six classrooms, two offices, two restrooms and a lunchroom. Additions for music and vocational training were added during the 1971-72 school year.
During the 1990-91 school year a new junior-senior high school addition was built. This project also included the addition of four elementary classrooms, a new K-12 library, office area, locker rooms, and a new kitchen and lunchroom area.
A new gym and lobby area were added during the 1995-96 school year. The 1905 three-story brick building was demolished in 1998. It cost $43,000 more to demolish the building than to build it. In 2,000, a five-classroom addition was constructed.
In the fall of 2021, a new 100-yard football field was constructed by the Grow Castlewood committee of the Castlewood Community Foundation, with donations from local residents and businesses.
In May 2022 a tornado damaged the elementary area, south gym, kitchen, library and other areas. The process of rebuilding was completed in 2025, which included a new gymnasium and new classrooms.
